Case Study:

ibc_chad_girls.jpgEducation for girls in Chad:

Education for girls in Chad has always been nothing but a dream. Because of their parent's low income, they couldn't afford to go to school. Most of the girls have been displaced many times. Their villages are very far from the nearest schools and the ones that do get to go suffer from extremely poor educational quality. Spmetimes getting girls in school is a challenge just because of their cultural traditions. Girls are expected to work at home and look after other children. They are sometimes even forced into early marriages. We also need to understand the importance of sending girls to school because it is a proven fact that women's educations are what influences their children's educations most. Thus, generations of children would remain uneducated.

Organizations:

Organizations all over the world are trying to help give education to the 113 million children who need it. Peace Corps is one of these dedicated organizations out to help this pressing important global issue. The volunteers who go to Chad teach English at the secondary school level, help Chadian teachers improve their English teaching skills and methods, and also participate in the development of English teaching materials for secondary schools, as well as strengthen the links between schools and communities. This is very important and is really helping the counties educational system and the economy of the Chad.
Another organization contributing to he fight for universal education is UNESCO, or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. They are helping by running more than 100 schools in Chad that are under the Associated Schools Project Network. Chad is one of the 35 countries that are using UNESCO’s Literacy Initiative for Empowerment, which helps by trying to stop illiteracy and ensuring that everyone gets a proper education. They are also involved in the 10 year UNESCO Teaching Training Initiative for sub-Saharan Africa. This is also a great project because it enables us to recruit more teachers, which would result in more schools, and more children would get the chance to br educated.
Concern is also one of the organizations taking a part in education for all. Giving a basic education is one of Concern's five key programs. Concern's overall goal is to improve the life standards of extremely poor women, men and children. One of the most effective ways of doing so is by giving them a chance to get a basic education.
As you can see, there are many other organizations out there making a difference in children's, women's, and men’s lives all around the world, helping them get the chance at a basic education in order to improve their living standards and to give them a shot at a successful, accomplished life. But at the same time, there are not nearly enough, and we need your help!

Why did we choose this topic?
Amy, Larissa and I chose to do our project on the education of girls in Chad simply because of the true severity of this pressing issue. The illiteracy rates of girls in Chad are shockingly high, and they are in desperate need of help. Furthermore, women have been disgraced and stereotyped all through history because we are not "as smart or as educated as boys, nor do we have their aptitudes for school". The three of us, being girls, would like to give the women in our world a chance to surpass everyone's expectations and to show the world that women have much to offer and that we are just as good as men (if not better!)

What organization did we choose to focus on?
In spite of all these extremely renowned and successful organizations listed above, we chose to focus mainly on an organization called CARE.

What exactly are they doing to try and combat or change your issue?
CARE is developing education networks through communities, well trained teachers that are willing to help more girls get educated and improve the educational quality. They also help by raising money to provide school supplies and improve classrooms.

What are some things you like about their program?
We like this organization because not only do they have well thought-out plans and goals, but it also proves effective. CARE has really helped Chad’s literacy rate and educational quality, and they also they have many connections with other organizations and governments. CARE is the largest private organization so we lknow we can trust them. There are also many ways we can get involved with this organization. For example, we can do fundraisers, raise awareness, join their action network, and we can create our own web pages to support CARE.
